This is the face of a ‘jerdge’ who doesn’t believe in the ‘mixing of races’. Keith Bardwell is a good guy. I believe he is. He is taking a boatload of pressure for his decision not to grant a marriage license to an interracial couple in Lousiana.
Some people have quickly denounced his actions as racist. You can call it what you will, but Bardwell says that there won’t be an apology rolling off his lips because he felt that he did what was right in his heart. So, we must examine the heart of a man in order to truly understand his position.
Just looking at the guy, you’d have to try to understand the climate in which he grew up in. It was not an accepted time for interracial couples. Racism was alive and visible on many levels during the era in which Bardwell’s belief system was formed.
Today, there are plenty of interracial couples that have married and lived productive lives raising their mixed children. I think we should be beyond the fear of a black person and white person coming together. That isn’t the worst thing that’s happening right now.
To some white people, they are feeling somewhat threatened as this nation has finally elected a “mixed” man to highest office in the land. As much as the blood in President Obama is half Kansan white and half Kenyan black, he is viewed as a “black” president. Some diehard white people believe that if you have a drop of black blood in your system, you are all the way black.
It will be interesting to see how things are resolved in this case. I expect that Bardwell will probably take this on the chin and be removed from his position. Without me riling up the gay marriage issue, I wonder if there should be a march by interracial couples demanding their rights.
I’m just saying….
